INFORMATION

A short course in geometric morphometrics will be held at Zonguldak Karaelmas University from July 24th to 26th 2010, immediately after the end of the 12th Rodent et Spatium in 2010 meeting. The workshop will cover introductory topics for biologists. Lectures and practicals will be given by Andrea Cardini (Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Italy, and the Hull York Medical School, UK) and Paul Van Daele (University of Ghent, Belgium).

WORKSHOP PROGRAM

  1. Introduction on morphometrics and data acquisition.
  2. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics, generalized Procrustes analysis, size and shape variables.
  3. Principal component analysis of shape coordinates.
  4. Thin plate spline deformation grids and other diagrams to visualize shape.
  5. Tests for group differences in size and shape.
  6. The study of allometry as an example of multivariate regression.
  7. Demonstration of more advanced techniques.

SOFTWARE & DATA

All of the computer programs used in the workshop are freeware. Links for downloads and more detailed information will be provided during the course. Example data will be available for participants to practice and try analyses. Participants who already have collected their own data are encouraged to bring the data with them. There will be opportunities for discussion, and sharing results and experiences with other participants.

CONTACT DETAILS AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION

A registration fee of 100 euros is requested to cover the costs of the workshop organization. The fee contains lunch and cocktail party. Participants will have to look for their own accommodation. We will do our best to find suitable dormitories, hotels and private lodges in Zonguldak. The number of participants will be limited to 25.
